HISTORY

Back in 1920 the only teacher of the small and poor village of Dherynia , Eleftherios Iacovou (1874-1922) had the idea and the initiative to organize a “School for the Parents” as he said. As a result of this the Club “Anagnostirion OMONIA”, “Reading Club OMONIA” was registered at the 1st of December 1920.

Main goals of the Club were and still are the promotion of self-education, literature and library, sports, recreational activities, theatre, events etc.

The Club was closed by the colonial authorities in 1955 and reregistered the same year under the name “MORFOTIKOS SYLLOGOS ANAGENNISIS DHERYNIAS”.

From the late 20's the Club maintained quite strong football and volleyball teams.

The football team was accepted in the Association Leagues (Third Division) in 1971 and the Club is among the first members of the Cyprus Volleyball Association (1972).

Anagennisis has a long tradition in promoting sports and culture in Dherynia especially among the young people and has earned a great deal of respect and recognition, not only in Dherynia but all over Cyprus .
